An extraordinary hip-hop dance music project and creative workshop by SPERANTO Worldwide in Berlin-Neukölln is transforming the lives of young people by focusing on personal development. Supported by our foundation, this initiative advocates for reduced inequality, gender equality, and social inclusion, while addressing the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals. In light of the COVID-19 crisis, which has laid bare both societal strengths and weaknesses, this project takes on even greater importance.
Summer Camp: Building Social Bonds
In the idyllic Brandenburg countryside, 30 young people from Berlin participated in an exciting summer camp, launching the initiative. This camp offered a safe and stimulating environment for participants to discover and explore their potential through diverse activities. It marked the beginning of a year-long program running weekly in Berlin-Neukölln until 2021, with additional opportunities for other young people to join.
Guided by experienced educators and artists, the program includes workshops in hip-hop, dance, rap/songwriting, and even tiny house construction. Among its most innovative achievements is the creation of Germany’s first mobile dance studio.
Beyond Dance: Living Social Values
This project is more than just a dance program—it’s an opportunity for young people to engage with and embody social values. It fosters community, builds self-esteem, and inspires alternative approaches to global sustainability. Testimonials from participants highlight the profound impact of the experience:
“At first, I didn’t feel like coming, but then I didn’t want to leave.”
“I really laughed for the first time in two years.”
“I gained an extra dose of self-confidence. I learned that I can be more confident, even in dancing. Things don’t have to be perfect—it’s okay to make mistakes.”
“This place is about give and take. Here, I realized how important equality is. Dancing means everything to me—I can express so much through it. I feel like I’ve been awakened.”
“Equality and sustainability go hand in hand. Everyone has beautiful qualities they might not see in themselves, but you can discover those through others. I found that deeply moving.”
“I’ve learned to open up to people, pursue my dreams, and stop holding myself back. This project isn’t just about dance—it’s about learning to appreciate your strengths and weaknesses.”
