Of Course, a School—Because Only Education Can Provide Sustainable Help
In Nepal, there is no immediate need for aid through food or clothing. However, the situation is different when it comes to education. While most children now learn to read and write, the paths to school are often arduous and dangerous. For this reason, it is crucial for every community to establish its own school. The first step is to ensure the basics are taught.
Dhurba from Sauraha, in Chitwan National Park, has even more ambitious plans. He envisions introducing a dual education system. After all, what opportunities do young people have in a region like the Chitwan National Park? Dhurba wants his students to be taught not only by teachers trained with modern teaching techniques but also to have the opportunity to receive vocational training in agriculture. To support this, he is providing land.
In an engaging conversation, Dhurba explained his project to me. The vegetables grown on this land will adhere to organic standards. These crops will be processed directly by the Sapana Lodge, creating a sustainable source of funding for the school. Vegetables are relatively expensive compared to other living costs in Nepal, and the market is flooded with conventionally grown produce from China and India. Nepal has the opportunity to become self-sufficient by focusing on niche products.
The project is managed by the S.V.S.I. organization as the general contractor, with financial support from the EBWK Foundation since 2014. Rolf Schmelzer has lived at Sapana Lodge for two years and provides ongoing support for the project. Regular meetings of the participating organizations are held on-site, with Rolf Schmelzer acting as a moderator to coordinate the individual plans of all parties involved. (Naturally, travel expenses are not covered by donation funds!)
